One could spend hours pondering the meaning of the curiously titled Down In Progress, but a brief look at the pidgin-English of the sleeve notes is enough to convince you this isn’t a terribly good idea. In fact, there’s very little on this Best Service collection that gives you any indication of the kind of material on offer unless descriptions like ‘extremely groovy-sounding track loops that will make the sun rise’ have any meaning for you.

Equally unfathomable is the decision to begin the collection with a handful of basic percussion tracks offering no more creative potential than someone tapping out beats on a pub table. Thankfully, after this rather inauspicious start, things begin to look up ‘swiftly and dramatically’ and by track seven or eight, you’re hooked into some fascinating loops which really get the creative juices flowing.

Not that it becomes any easier to figure out what producers DJ Harsh and DJ Tom Bone had in mind as the likely destination for this highly eclectic mix or indeed, how they set about compiling it. But that’s all part of its appeal and sets it apart from the kind of samples and loops featured on so many mediocre collections. With so many hidden gems to be found, you simply cannot afford to leave any part of this collection unheard. Thankfully, with separate audio, WAV, REX2 and Reason Refill discs, auditioning and loading samples is dead simple and helps overcome the problem of the poor sleeve notes.

The tracks are divided into Basic Percussions, Clubbi Mixed Styles, Modern Sequences and High-Quality Progressive Stuff (we did warn you) and include loops, single samples and construction kits, with BPM figures (where applicable) used in the naming of the samples themselves. There’s a lot of very trancey material here, but plenty of other styles, too most of them danceable with some great hooks. If you value both sonic and rhythm originality, this highly individualistic collection has much to offer. As it says in one of the few lines of the advertising blurb that actually makes any sense: No fillers guaranteed.

If you like your samples created by people who haven’t read the rule book (or an English dictionary), this collection has much to recommend it. (Music Tech Magazine 3/2004)
